Review: Urban Decay Naked Palette

To contact us Click HERE
The Urban Decay Naked Palette was realeased last year in 2010, and although Naked 2 is out, I just got the first Naked palette for Christmas and I LOVE it. It is by far the most amazing eyeshadow palette I've ever tried, amazing quality eyeshadows, probably my second favorite next to MAC. The colors are totally gorgeous, and probably all I'd ever need, consdering I mainly stick to neutrals when it comes to eye makeup because I find that's what flatters my eyes the most. I will do swatches in another post, later, probably in two different parts, but for now I'm just going to be talking about it You probably know, this palette contains twelve full sized eyeshadows for $17 each...a $204 value right there...plus a mirror in the palette as well as a full-sized eyeshadow brush, which retails for $26, and a mini primer potion...so this palette is worth more than $230, and it was just $48, which is a steal. The quality of the colors is unbelievable and they stay all day long, especially when used with the Primer Potion (another amazing product which I will do a seperate review on another time) and, once, I realize it's bad to fall asleep with makeup on but I did, and in the morning my eyeshadow looked just as it had before. The colors, like I said, are stunning...beautiful neutrals including three matte colors. Shadows are... Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck, Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep, and Gunmetal. I will go more into detail with colors and all of that when I post swatches another time. These shadows are all amazing, as I'm sure you;ve heard me say several times throughout this post. Awesome quality, even better price! Great color selection, the perfect neutral eye palette! You can get this product from Urban Decay's website (http://www.urbandecay.com) or Sephora or Ulta. It's definitely worth a try! The brush is also of excellent quality. The bristles are soft and don't fall out, and it packs on color well. It's also easy to clean...much easier than my other elf brushes. This is an awesome palette for a pretty neutral eye.

The Hunger Games Book/Movie Review!

It's been a while since I've blogged but I've really come to miss it. Blogging every day was just too much and it made it seem more like a job rather than a hobby. I'm back now though and while I can't promise I will blog often, I definitely will try to. Today's blog post will be a review on The Hunger Games book and movie, by Suzanne Collins.

I've just read the book for the first time this past week. I read the first three chapters Tuesday night, the majority of it Wednesday, and finished up the last chapter on Thursday. The reason I decided to read it now was because one of my friends invited me to go and see it this past Friday with her and a few other people for her birthday. It was a really good book. I can't say which is better; the book or the movie, because I loved both of them. Despite its popularity, I had never read the book until now, I'm not quite sure why, but I'm very happy I decided to give it a chance.

The book was so detailed and well written that you could imagine every scene (what I imagined was pretty much just like it was in the movie) haha I don't mean to sound like an English teacher when I say that! But it's true...and it was just such a thrilling book and kept you wanting more...what else is there to say about it? The book was fantastic, probably one of my favorites after, of course, the Pretty Little Liars series, which is also amazing, If you haven't read it, basically the book is a bout a 16 year old girl, Katniss Everdeen, who lives in District 12 in the fiction country of Panem. Once a year, all twelve districts must choose one boy and one girl to fight in the annual Hunger Games - a fight to the death, literally. Her 12 year old sister Primrose is selected to participate, but Katniss volunteers instead. The boy from District 12, Peeta Mellark, is someone Katniss remembers from a long time ago when he gave her bread when her and her family were starving. So, basically that's the basic storyline...read it and find out what happens. Personally this is one of the best books I've ever read, as I've probably already mentioned (ha) but DEFINITELY CHECK IT OUT. It's freakin' awesome:)

The movie...well first let me just say that Josh Hutcherson blonde is sexy. Like, really sexy. ♥ haha. Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress, as well, and is just how I had pictured Katniss before reading the book. She looked stunning as well! The movie was amazing, one part where one of my friends totally screamed haha but it was awesome! It was not as gory as the descriptions in the book, thankfully, which is good for anyone who doesn't like to see gruesome scence such as that. The one part that bugged me is that they played absolutely none of the music from the soundtrack, except for in the end credits. I think they should have played it more often, maybe Safe & Sound (Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars) when Rue died...oh, btw, that has to have been one of the saddest parts. Anyway, the movie was pretty awesome...ooh, and Catching Fire (the sequel) comes out in a movie November of 2013!

Playing Oboe/Competition/Band

To contact us Click HERE
Yesterday I had a band competition (won silver:) so I thought I would blog about my experience playing oboe, (I love it,) and being part of a concert band, what competition is like, etc.

I'm in my last year of middle school, there are three grades in my middle school, no not telling what grade I'm in...just 'cause haha...but anyway, around December of this year I decided I wanted to join band, so I talked to my band director and he said that, they had just had the winter cncert, would just be starting on new songs, it would be a good time to join, especially because I want to be part of band in high school, and it would be beneficial to have a little prior experience. So, after much thought, I was between clarinet, and oboe. I listened to several videos of each on YouTube and finally realized oboe is the instrument I love, I've loved it since I first heard one in third grade. It took a few tries to rent the oboe, as there were a few payment issues, but eventually it was worked out and I first started on oboe in the middle of January. I love it. Oboe is something I can look forward t, I actually considered joning when I first started middle school, but for some stupid reason waited til now. It's so fun to know how to ply an instrument! The only downside is, the reeds. I use Jones Medium Oboe Reeds, they are what work best for me. As you may know, oboe reeds are expnsive, a good reed costs about $15 at least. And you go through them pretty quickly, they're very easy top break. I'm currently on my sixth reed since January, and yeah, I have a friend who plays clarinet who uses an average of twelve per month, but then again, you can get a box of twelve good clarinet reeds for about $10. If you're willing to spend the money, oboe is an amazing instrument to learn how to play. Also, it is one of the hardest. You need a good embouchure and when you first start need to be willing to work hard at it and practice often. Again, all worth it!

So, yesterday was competition, my band got a silver medal. It was fun, we were one of the first groups to perform, meaning after we performed, we basically had the whole day until awards to do whatever we wanted - talking, eating, just hanging out, whatever, so it was really fun:) The stage was pretty amazing and I loved playing, although my reed was brand new, and I probably should've broken it in a little bit first hahaha. Other than that everything went smoothly, and at the clinic afterward, turns out the only thing keeping us from gold was pretty much just being perfectly in tune. We were actually just one point away from gold which is really annoying, but whatever, we still did good and my band director seemed pretty happy with it:)

Graduation Dresses!

So graduation is coming up (for me anyway when I graduate middle school in June:) which means its time to start shopping for dresses, especially this past week, which for me was April vacation. I picked two dresses, both from Hollister, I think the price was $59.90 for both? I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Both are really pretty and I can't decide what one I want to wear!

Pretty Spring/Summer Dresses!

If you read my last post (on graduation dresses) you'll know what my dresses look like, (tell me which one you like best!) I personally love summer dresses, I've especially noticed how many cute dresses Hollister has lately, as well as Abercrombie. Not only am I shopping for graduation dresses recently, but also dresses for the grad dance, this formal dance thing at the end of the year. I did buy my dress, but cannot find it on the website so I'll have to take a picture later and put it up in another post, but I got it at Macy's on sale for $63 and it's pink with flowers, and it's a really pretty, strapless minidress. Anyway, I wanted to talk about some of the cutest dresses and share my thoughts, plus share with you what will probably end up being my graduation outfit!

Personally, I love the Hollister dresses, as I already mentioned many times. I love the casual summery look of them, plus they are strapless (personally my favorite) and are not too revealng. They come in a ton of cute prints and patterns, too, and are relatively affordable at $60 or less, and will probably be on sale soon as well. They are really comfortable soft dresses and definitely very pretty. I like this lime green one:
Boneyard Beach Dress
Personally, with dresses I like to keep my shoes pretty casual unless it's some formal event in which I feel like wearing heels (will do another post on that later) so I like flip flops...that are a little bit nicer than just your average flip flops. I picked out these leather ones from Hollister, and they match the dress perfectly! They are currently $34.50 which might seem a bit expensive for flip flops but they are totally worth it.
Leather Beach Flip Flops
For jewelry, I plan to keep that simple as well, just my fake diamond studs, and Tiffany bracelet, maybe a cocktail ring from Forever 21, but nothing too special!

Tell me what you think of this look in the comments below!

Enigma electronic music Enigma is a project founded in Germany, Michael Cretu, David Fairstein and Frank Peterson in 1990. Born Cretu Romania designed Enigma project working in Germany, but based on Ibiza, Spain for their Studios A.R.T. Recording Studio, in the case where the actual all exits to examine the puzzle until today since the beginning of the 1990s to May 2009. Cretu is a composer and producer of the project. The music album was a commercial success, Cretu, on the first single "Sadeness (part I)" put Gregorian chant and the sexual nature of a dance rhythm that was very special to the ears of the public. Cretu explains that the music album crimes and philosophical topics as life after death, hence the name of the enigma. Already been used one type of Gregorian chant 1987 Sandra seconds "Everlasting Love", not the integration in other parts of the opening song. "Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust" Exclusive Excerpt

To contact us Click HERE
Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust 3D Book Cover From Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture BlogThe release of legendary engineer/producer Ken Scott's memoir, entitled Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust, is coming up soon on June 6, so I thought this was a good time for another excerpt. This one is from the first Supertramp chapter (there are 3) that outlines some of the unique recording methods used on their breakthrough album Crime of the Century.
--------------------
"One way of looking at how I approached Crime was that it started as Google Earth. I knew the overall shape of it, and as we went along it became more like the Street View as we slowly saw every nook and cranny. The fact was that I was actually bored with recording. I’d recorded drums, guitars, tambourines and everything else you can imagine so many bloody times and it was always the same. Since we were going all out on this record, I decided that we should try to make it as different as we can. I threw that concept at the band, and they just ran with the idea.Like with the sound effects. Most times when sound effects were used on records back then, the engineer would go to the closet that had the sound effects records or tapes, and that’s what he’d use. Everyone used the same ones. I insisted, “If we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it properly and record our own, exactly like a movie,” so we rented a stereo Nagra portable recorder and recorded all of our own sound effects. For example, for the song “School”, I went down to a friends house that was two doors down from where my three daughters were going to school, just in time for the lunch break because I knew the kids would be out in the yard playing. I recorded for a half hour, then went off to the studio. Roger would then listen on headphones to try to find bits that might actually work in the song, and we’d go through it and finalize what we were going to use.
For percussion we tried to use different things that weren’t typical percussion instruments. On “Dreamer” there’s a part that under normal circumstances would have been a tambourine, but that would’ve made it so ordinary. In trying to get something different, I had the idea of getting Rick [Davies] to shake a pair of drum brushes. He started off doing it rather heavily, but all you could hear was a whistle from them. We got him to slow it down a bit and do it with more wrist than arm action and suddenly we got the effect that we wanted. There’s a kind of whistle there at the same time as the brushes go through the air, which makes it sound totally different than anything you’d expect but still fills the rhythmic need.
Probably one of the  best examples of teamwork was when recording some tom overdubs, also on “Hide In Your Shell.” We wanted to get a change in pitch on each tom hit, so every time Bob [Siebenberg, Supertramp's drummer] hit a tom I changed the varispeed, speeding the tape up and then bringing it back to normal. When played back this makes the tom's pitch go down and then as it tails off it goes back up to normal. Bob had to hit the tom on beat with the tempo going all over the place, a feat he accomplished admirably as can be heard on the final product.
Everything but the kitchen sink went into this recording. Actually we got pretty close to a kitchen sink as well. The session percussionist extraordinaire and all around nice guy Ray Cooper had once told me of something which apparently was used a lot in horror movies - a water gong. You take a gong, hit it and then gradually lower it into water. This creates a strange, eery effect because as the gong is immersed the water makes its pitch change. We were working on the ending of “Crime of the Century” and for those that don’t know, “Crime” is in two parts. There’s the song and then it goes into a seemingly endless piano part during which it builds and builds with different instruments and lines coming and going throughout. We were at the point where the drums came in and we needed something to point out that something big was about to happen. Enter the water gong. Now that name is slightly incorrect because it ended up that we didn’t actually use a gong; we used a piece of sheet metal instead, but it worked just as well. We rented a large fish tank and filled it with water and, at the appropriate time, Bob struck it and lowered it into the water, and it sounded amazing. What’s great is that if you hear it on its own with no other instruments and without any reverb, you actually hear the water bubbling. So cool. That effect actually became a pet thing for me as I used it in one form or another on a number of future albums as well. A word of warning however; the filling of the fish tank is slow but fairly easy to accomplish, one bucket of water at a time. But, once you’ve finished the recording you’re left with one hell of a heavy fish tank to empty and so you have to have a fair number of pretty hefty guys to get it to the kitchen or bathroom sink to empty it.
We went completely overboard on everything, which is why the album took close to six months, a very long time for an album back then. Once we were given that crucial go-ahead from the label, we had no real choice but to strive for perfection."

A Couple Of Cool Mixing Tools

To contact us Click HERE
Here are a couple of tools that I've brought up before in other posts, but thought it was worth bringing them up again. The first is a learning tool and the second is a mixing tool.

The Audio Mixing Bootcamp Video Course
If your mixes aren't what you think they should be, or you're confused about how to get started, here's a video mixing course that I recently did for Lynda.com that will teach you the fundamentals of getting a strong, punchy mix regardless of the type of music.

The course covers every aspect of mixing, from setting up your listening environment, to setting up your mix, to how and when to use EQ, compression and effects, to the best way to balance a mix. There are over a hundred movies that describe every step of process of creating a mix, and you can see the full list here.

Delay Genie
About a year ago one of my publishers, Hal Leonard, asked me if I'd be interested in doing a phone app. If I was going to do one, I wanted it to be something that I would use myself, all the time, so I came up with the Delay Genie.

The Delay Genie basically replaces those time delay charts that most studios used to have so you could easily set the reverb predelay and delay times when you're mixing. While most delay plugins allow you to do some form of automatic timing, the Delay Genie is different because it will allow you to easily calculate dotted notes and triplets, which are time denominations that are essential to a good mix and one of the tricks of most top mixers (see this recent post).

Delay Genie Screen image from Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture production blogYou can calculate the time delay either by first entering the BPM of the song, or tapping it in where the app will calculate it for you. After the BPM is directly entered or tapped in, the Delay Genie will instantly display:
  • delays in 1/4, 1/8, 1/6, 1/32, 1/64 note time increments
  • delays in triplet time increments for 1/4, 1/8, 1/6, 1/32, 1/64 notes
  • delays in dotted note time increments for 1/4, 1/8, 1/6, 1/32, 1/64 notes
As a bonus, in the Live mode, the app also calculates the delay time from the stage to a delay speaker stack in a live sound reinforcement situation.

The Delay Genie app can be used for:
  • setting the delay time to make a track larger than life
  • setting the delay time so it fits better in the track
  • setting the delay time so it sticks out of the track
  • setting reverb pre-delay time
  • setting reverb decay time
What's more, the price is right. It's FREE, although it will cost $.99 if you want to remove the advert.

Give it a shot and let me know what you think. It's now available in the Apple iTunes App Store.

The Feds Threaten Gibson And Artists Again

To contact us Click HERE
Gibson logo image file from Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture production blogLast year I reported about how the US Department of Justice and the US Fish And Wildlife Service raided Gibson Guitars not once, but twice on the grounds that the company was using protected wood from overseas in the making of their guitars (you can read about it here, here, here and here). During the raids, not only were pallets of wood confiscated, but computers containing information about the wood as well.

The Justice Department claimed that Gibson somehow violated the 112 year old Lacey Act, which was originally instituted to regulate the trade in bird feathers for hats, but was amended in 2008 to include wood and plants, with the express intent of protecting certain species of wood from being over-harvested. Gibson claimed that any exotic foreign wood that they use in the creation of instruments came from certified Forest Stewardship suppliers, so there was never a violation.

After Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander got involved, it seemed like everything was smoothed over; until now.

It seems that word has recently come down from the Justice Department that it's planning to raid summer concerts in order to seize what they deem to be illegal guitars made from banned tone woods. Another possibility is that guitars could be seized from musicians returning from out of the country tours at the border by Customs agents.

The governments actions seem to make no sense on so many levels.

1) Gibson seems to have presented adequate proof that the tone woods used were legally sourced.

2) Even if that's not the case, seizing an instrument from an end user that's unknowingly paid a good deal money in a purchase without any compensation is just wrong. Seize the guitars at the factory if you must, but don't treat the end users as criminals too.

3) Expand that to the concert scene. Imagine going to see an act that suddenly had their favorite instrument confiscated by the government. That's not going to help their performance any; one that you paid a lot of money to see.

4) It's an election year. This action can't possibly make many many friends for the administration, and will most certainly alienate a number of solid constituencies.

Come on, Justice Department. Let's concentrate on more important things. Everyone is for protecting endangered forests, but there's got to be a better way than this.

Thanks to Rob Carty for the heads-up on this story. You can read more about it here.

Timing Reverbs To The Track

To contact us Click HERE
reverb image from Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture production blogSince my post last week on timing delays to the pulse of the track, I received a number of requests about how to do the same with reverbs. Why would you want to time the verb to the track? Because it adds depth without sticking out and makes the mix seem more polished.

Here's what to do to time the decay:

Trigger the reverb by adding it to the snare and adjusting the decay parameter so that the decay just dies by the next snare hit. The idea is to make the decay “breathe” with the track. You can use this decay time for the other reverbs, but you'll probably have to adjust them slightly because the decay response of every reverb or reverb setting (like hall, plate, chamber, room) is a little different.

Here's what to do to time the predelay:

Predelay is the slight delaying of the reverb entrance after the source signal. The reason to use it is  so that the source signal doesn't sound washed out in ambience since you hear it's attack, then the reverb, so there's more definition as a result.

The same way that you determined the delay time for the track (check this post out for that) will give you the timing for the predelay. The difference is that you usually need a smaller increment than you might've used for a delay, and it's usually under 100 milliseconds (normally way under).

For instance, if you determined that a suitable 1/16th note delay time is 150 milliseconds, cut it in half (75 ms), then cut it in half again (37.5 ms), and maybe even in half again (19 ms, rounding it off). That's probably going to be the best timing, but don't be afraid to try longer or shorter variations.

Usually predelay in the 20 to 40 ms range works best. If in doubt or you don't won't to time it, just start with 20 ms as a good compromise.

Of these 2 parameters, the predelay is probably the most important in that the reverb seems more a part of the track when it's timed. If you really want the reverb to stick out a bit, just randomly select a predelay time.

That's how it's done. If you want more info on using effects, check out The Mixing Engineer's Handbook, or The Audio Mixing Bootcamp book or video course from Lynda.com.

Nikki Manaj "Super Bass" Song Analysis

To contact us Click HERE
Will W. requested a song analysis for Nicki Manaj's "Super Bass," the 5th single from her debut album Pink Friday. The song is interesting because it draws from R&B, hip hop, and electronic music, fusing them into the perfect pop tune. The song made it to #3 on the Billboard charts, but it turned out to be a much bigger online hit, with the video getting over 250 million views. Like all song analysis, we'll look at the song itself, the arrangement, the sound and the production.

The Song
"Super Bass" is a pretty straight-forward pop song with the standard 3 sections - verse, chorus and bridge. The form looks like this:

Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus
No section is repeated and the song has a hard ending, which is unusual for a pop song. But the most unusual aspect of the song form is that there's a breakdown half-way during the chorus for 4 bars, then the hook is repeated for the last 4.

There won't be any awards won for the lyrics of this song, but pop songs are usually sold on their hooks, not their lyrics, and "Super Bass" has a good one.

The Arrangement
The arrangement of "Super Bass" is different than most pop songs. The song begins with a short intro where a chorused electric guitar with an autofilter (sort of an automatic wah that opens and closes with the dynamics of the playing) plays a line (which is never heard again in the song, by the way) over a low piano pad, a high arpeggiated string part and percussion. Halfway through Nicki enters with the vocals. The song then breaks down to an electric piano pad, tuned percussion, and halfway through, synth bass. Throughout the song, claps are used instead of a snare drum for the song's pulse.

For the chorus, Nicki's voice is doubled and spread to slightly to the left and right, the bass enters playing quarter notes, and the 1/8th note arpeggiated string line plays again. The claps are doubled while the kick plays a 4 on the floor pattern for the first 4 bars, then plays a "boom daboom" pattern for the rest of the section..

The second verse is identical with the first except for the arpeggiated strings that enter half-way through the verse. The second chorus is identical to the first.

Then the bridge starts with a breakdown that features a 1/16th note synth over a lower pad. The claps enter on the 3rd bar, and the kick and 1/4 note arpeggiated strings at bar 5 and remain in the song for the rest of the section.

The last chorus is identical to the first.

The arrangement elements look like this:

  * The Foundation: bass synth, kick, high hat and claps

  * The Rhythm:  the tuned percussion, arpeggiated synths

  * The Pad: synth pads, synth bass and electric piano

*The Lead: lead vocals, guitar in the intro

  * The Fills: Background vocals in the 2nd verse

Another interesting point is that "Super Bass" is one of the few songs where the choruses remain identical throughout the song. Usually additional instruments enter over the course of the song, making the last one much bigger sounding than the first, but that's not the case here.

The Sound
"Super Bass" has a very modern layered mix, meaning that the mix elements are put into different environments with the help of effects like reverb and delay. The stereo electric piano (which plays throughout the song) is pretty dry as is the high hat, but most other mix elements have some sort of an effect, which pushes them further back in the mix depth-wise. The vocal has both a long reverb and a fairly long timed delay you can't hear during the verses and choruses, but which is very apparent during the bridge. The arpeggiated strings seem to have a different timed delay on them as well.

The song is very compressed, although most of it does sound pretty natural as you don't hear any pumping or breathing or compressor artifacts, especially in the vocal. Although most mixers and mastering engineers compress a pop song as standard operating procedure these days in order to make it as loud as possible, I bet "Super Bass" would sound a lot better with a little more natural dynamics, although there probably isn't much to begin with considering that all the musical elements except the vocals, intro guitar sound and maybe the electric piano sound programmed.

The Production
This is a song made for Top 40 radio. It's catchy, with a pretty good hook, but oddly, it never settles into a groove. At the beginning of every chorus when the kick begins with a 4 on the floor, it begins to groove, only to deviate from it after 4 bars. This is highly unusual for any Top 40 hit, especially one aimed at the dance community, yet here it is, still a hit.

Like with most hits, there's a lot more going on than meets the ear. Listen to the tuned percussion and how it pushes the song along. Listen to the electric piano and how it subtly ties the song together. Listen to the arpeggiated strings in the chorus. Listen to the cymbal swells at the beginning of the song and the end of the bridge. The way these elements work in the the song is how a rather simple tune becomes a hit.

Send me your song requests!

Born in Mechanicsville, Virginia, Jason Thomas Mraz is a lyricist and singer of genres such as pop rock, blue eyed soul and alternative rock. Born to a Czech family, Mraz always stresses that he had an ideal childhood despite the split of his parents when he was four. He is one of the leading members of VH1’s “Save the Music” foundation and “Free the Children”. In 2010, Jason Mraz was awarded the SIMA Humanitarian of the Year award.

In 2001, Mraz entered the music scene by recording a live concert at a coffee house and released the album. His first album was “Live at Java Joe”, but the album never received commercial success.  His second album came in 2002 following his contract with Electra Records. The album titled “Waiting for my Rocket to Come” was a commercial hit and debuted at #55 of the Billboard Top 200. “The Remedy” was his most successful song and was rated at 15 on the Billboard list. ”Curbside Prophet” and “I’ll Do Anything” were the other hits in the album. In 2005, Mraz released his next album with collaboration with Atlantic records. The album was an instant hit and he received three Grammy nominations including Best Engineered Album, Non Classical and Producer of the Year. “Life is Wonderful”, a song from the album, became an instant hit worldwide.

In 2006, Mraz performed live at the Mosaic Music Festival held at Singapore. In the same year, he toured the UK, the US and Ireland. This new live recorded album was released in December 2006 and was called “Selections for Friends”. Also, Mraz's voice and lyrics were used in the show "Ugly Betty" and the soundtrack "Beauty in Ugly".

Jason later recorded with Mandy Moore and produced background vocals for the song “Slummin' in Paradise” in 2007. In 2008, Mraz released his new album “We Sing. We Dance. Born on July 8th 1961, Toby Keith is a country music artist from America. Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, Toby during early days of his career was associated with Mercury Records and released his first four albums with them. All four albums received either a gold certification or higher. In 1990 his first song on the album Should’ve Been a Cowboy was the biggest hit of that year. The song topped every country music chart and sold almost three million copies. In 1998, Keith signed a deal with DreamWorks Nashville and released his first album with them titled How Do You Like Me Now. Title song How Do You Like Me Now on the new album was an instant hit and was one of the most successful songs of the year 2000. Along with DreamWorks Nashville, he released three more albums named My Chain, Unleashed and Shock’n Y’all. All three albums received multi-platinum certification by the RIAA. In 2005, Keith started his own music company called Show Dog Nashville after the closure of DreamWorks. Under his own music company Keith released two more albums called White Trash With Money and Big Dog Daddy in 2006 and 2007.

Until now, Keith has released more than 12 albums, 10 are the studio compilations, 2 are Christmas albums, and the rest are multiple compilation albums. Toby became fascinated with music while playing in Fort Smith Boys Club football team. His interactions with musicians who came to play became the reason for his love towards music. Keith started playing guitar at the age of eight. In 1979, he graduated from the Moore High School.

During his early music days, Keith along with his bandmates recorded his songs and distributed them at various music company offices in Nashville. When Mercury records heard the tape they signed a deal with Keith and recorded the first four albums of his career. Keith also was featured in one of the Beach Boys albums in the year 1996.

Keith also made appearances on the small screen too. He was made the brand ambassador of Ford and appeared in various Ford commercials. He also appeared at Total Non Stop Action wrestling on few occasions. He gave a guest appearance on The Colbert Report which aired on Comedy Central. Toby has acted in two films so far. He acted in Paramount Pictures' Broken Bridge released in 2005 along with Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds and Tees Harper. In 2008, his second film was released. The movie was called Beer For My Horse and was based on a song by Willie Nelson.

Keith has won an American Music Award four times. He has won in the category of Favorite Country Album and Favorite Country Male Artist. He has been declared Country Artist of the Decade by Billboard. He has won seven Academy of Country Music Awards, and a Country Music Association Award as Best Male Vocalist in 2001.

Toby Keith has set over 30 dates for the concerts in his upcoming 2012 tour. Additionally, Brantley Gilbert will join him in a few of his concerts. View Toby Keith's full ticket schedule for dates all across America at TonsOfTickets.com.

6 Tips For Balancing The Bass And Drum Mix

To contact us Click HERE
The biggest bass drum from Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture production blog Perhaps the most difficult task of a mixing engineer is balancing the bass and drums (especially the bass and kick). Nothing can make or break a mix faster than the way these instruments work together. It’s not uncommon for a mixer to spend hours on this balance (both level and frequency) because if the relationship isn’t correct, then the song will just never sound big and punchy.

So how do you get this mysterious balance?

In order to have the impact and punch that most modern mixes exhibit, you have to make a space in your mix for both of these instruments so they won't fight each other and turn into a muddy mess. While simply EQing your bass high and your kick low (or the other way around), might work at it’s simplest, it’s best to have a more in-depth strategy, so consider the following:

1) EQ the kick drum between 60 to120Hz as this will allow it to be heard on smaller speakers. For more attack and beater click add between 1k to 4kHz. You may also want to dip some of the boxiness between 200-500Hz. EQing in the 30-60Hz range will produce a kick that you can feel, but it may also sound thin on smaller speakers and probably won’t translate well to a variety of speaker systems. Most 22" kick drums are centered somewhere around 80Hz anyway.

2) Bring up the bass with the kick. The kick and bass should occupy slightly different frequency spaces. The kick will usually be in the 60 to 80Hz range whereas the bass will emphasize higher frequencies anywhere from 80 to 250Hz (although sometimes the two are reversed depending upon the song). Shelve out any unnecessary bass frequencies (below 30Hz on kick and below 50Hz on the bass, although the frequency for both may be as high as 60Hz according to style of the song and your taste) so they're not boomy or muddy. There should be a driving, foundational quality to the combination of these two together.

A common mistake is to emphasize the kick with either too much level or EQ, while not featuring enough of the bass guitar (see the graphic on the left for a good visual of what it sounds like). This gives you the illusion that your mix is bottom light, because what you’re doing is shortening the duration of the low frequency envelope in your mix. Since the kick tends to be more transient than the bass guitar, this gives you the idea that the low frequency content of your mix is inconsistent. For Pop music, it is best to have the kick provide the percussive nature of the bottom while the bass fills out the sustain and musical parts.

3) Make sure that the snare is strong, otherwise the song will lose its drive when the other instruments are added in. This usually calls for at least some compression, especially if the snare hits are inconsistent throughout the song. You may need a small EQ boost at 1kHz for attack, 120 to 240Hz for fullness, and 10k for snap. As you bring in the other drums and cymbals, you might want to dip a little of 1kHz on these to make room for the snare. Also make sure that the toms aren't too boomy (if so, shelve out the frequencies below 60 Hz).

4) If you’re having trouble with the mix because it's sounding cloudy and muddy on the bottom end, mute both the kick drum and bass to determine what else might be in the way in the low end. You might not realize that there are some frequencies in the mix that aren't really musically necessary. With piano or guitar, you're mainly looking for the mids and top end to cut through, while the low-end is just getting in the way, so it’s best to clear some of that out with a hi-pass filter. When soloed, the instrument might sound too thin, but with the rest of the mix the low-end will now sound so much better and you won’t be missing that low end from the other instruments. Now the mix sounds louder, clearer, and fuller. Be careful not to cut too much from the other instruments, as you might loose the warmth of the mix.

5) For Dance music, be aware of kick drum to bass melody dissonance. The bass line over the huge sound systems in today's clubs is very important and needs to work very well with the kick drum. But if your kick is centered around an A note and the bass line is tuned to A#, it's going to clash. Tune your kick samples to the bass lines (or vice versa) where needed.
6) If you feel that you don't have enough bass or kick, boost the level, not the EQ. This is a mistake that everyone makes when their first getting their mixing chops together. Most bass drums and bass guitars have plenty of low end and don't need much more, so be sure that their level together and with the rest of the mix is correct before you go adding EQ. Even then, a little goes a long way.
While these aren't the only mix tips that can help with the bass and drum relationship during your mix (you can check out either The Audio Mixing Bootcamp or The Mixing Engineer's Handbook for more), they're a great place to start. Remember, go easy on the EQ, as a little goes a long way.
